just click through to the boxedup sign-up page and fill it out to get started.
we've got browser extensions (sets of buttons) for both Internet Explorer and for Firefox; these extensions install a couple of easy-to-use buttons on your browser, one to add new items to your list (from the page that you're on) and the other to take you to your lists on boxedup
we've also got bookmarklet buttons for Safari browser users (which can be used on other browsers too if you prefer bookmarklets over extensions); there are two bookmarklets, and you can use one or both: first there's the 'Add to boxedup' bookmarklet, so when you're on a page that contains something that you want then click on the bookmarklet to add it to your list; and then there's the 'My boxedup lists' bookmarklet, which is just a link to your lists
we've added instructions below on how to start using these tools, and you'll also find links to these things in the 'Things to do' section on the right hand-side of your 'my lists' page
in Internet Explorer right click on the links and select 'Add to favorites'
in Firefox and Safari drag the links to your bookmarks bar on your browser
here are the bookmarklets
you can either add a new item to your list when you're on another site using one of the tools mentioned above, or you can add an item when you're anywhere on the site by clicking the "Add new product" link in the top right-hand corner of the page (you'll be asked to paste in the URL of the page that contains the thing that you want to add to your list), and this will take you to a form where you can confirm and edit on the details that have been pulled in from that page
under each item on your list you'll see a series of links, one of which is 'Edit' - to edit an item just click on that link and a form will open containing all the details relating to that item. Just make the changes that you want to make, and then hit 'save'
under each item on your list you'll see a series of links, one of which is 'Delete' - to delete an item just click on that link and the item will be removed from your list
you can create a new list from anywhere on the site by clicking on the 'Create new list' link in the top right-hand corner; you can also create a new list when you're adding a new item to your list by clicking on the 'create a new list' link in Step 1
if you want to delete a list entirely then just go to that list, and in the 'Things to do box' click on the 'Delete this list' link (the only lists that you can't delete are the default 'Things I want' and 'Things I have' lists)
once you've found something that you want to add to your list then as well as giving the item a name (i.e. Nokia N800), you can then add tags, which just help you to sort and manage all the things that you've added to your list. So if you had added a Nokia N800 to your list you might also tag it as Nokia, mobile, gadget, or however else you want to categorise it. When you're looking at your entire list you'll be able to see the list of tags that you've used to categorise all the things on your list - to quickly see the items relating to each tag just click on that tag and you'll see all items that have been tagged with that description. Wow! And we thought tags were simple to explain!
there are 2 ways of doing this (remember to be logged in to actually add them as a friend)
1) Search for your friends by clicking on the 'People' link at the top of the page, and then search for them using their email address using the 'Find people' box on the righ-hand side; if they have a list registered with that email address then you'll be taken to their list. You then click on the 'add to my friends' link under their name - they'll then be sent an email and can confirm that they want to connect with you.
2) If you want to add a friend (or friends) to your list who hasn't already joined boxedup then you can send them an invite. Go to any of your lists and you'll see a box called 'Invite friends' on the right-hand side. Just add your friend's email address and hit 'invite' and they'll be sent an email saying that you've asked them to join boxedup. Once the invites have been sent you'll see the status of all current invites on your 'Friends' tab.
has it really got that bad?
if there's really no scope to hug and make up then go into your 'Friends' tab and you'll see a list of all your current friends. To delete one of your friends just click the 'Delete' link under their name
you might feel an empty void after doing this, so as a bit of therapy go and find something nice to add to your list
under each item on your list you'll see a series of links, one of which is 'Move' - to move an item just click on that link; a box will appear containing a drop-down with all your lists in. Just pick the list that you want to move the item to and hit the 'Move' button.
yes, in the 'Things to do' box on your 'My lists' page you'll find a link saying import list from Amazon. Just click this list and the contents of your Amazon list will be imported into your boxedup.com list.
Amazon lists can be imported from the US and UK Amazon sites currently; we'll be adding more soon
a reserved item is something that's have been reserved for that person by somebody who's going to buy it for them
you need to have connected with somebody to be able to reserve an item on their list, and you need to be logged in to reserve something from their list
just go to the list of the person that you want to buy something for, find what you want to get them, and under that item you'll find a link saying 'Reserve'. Just hit that link and the item will be reserved. Now go and buy that thing for them. And once you've bought and given it to them, go to the 'Reserved gifts' tab on your 'My lists' page, find the item and click on 'I've given this to they won't be able to see who's reserved that item you can keep track of items that you've reserved on the 'Reserved gifts' tab that appears on your profile once you've reserved something you can un-reserve an item at any time by just clicking on the 'un-reserve' link under the item only you can see your reserved list there are a couple of ways to share your lists with the wider world, either using the
boxedup Flash widget that can be plugged into social networking
sites or other environments that allow Flash (see below for details of which sites this covers), or using your list
RSS feeds (which your browser will be able to detect when you’re in the list that you want the RSS feed for).
We’re also working on creating a Facebook application, and we’ll let everybody know when it’s ready! and for you Mac lovers, there's also a Mac desktop widget
that sits on your desktop and gives you easy access to everything on your boxedup lists if you're a startpage fan (e.g. Netvibes,
iGoogle, My Yahoo,
Live.com) then we're going to be working on ways to integrate your lists into your
preferred startpage, and for now you can integrate your list(s) into these environments using the RSS feeds that are
available for each list. you can select which list you want to show and share using the Flash widget the Flash widget works with MySpace, hi5, Friendster and Piczo
